#5 MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE PROJECT

It doesn't take our children a minute to mention what they wish for their birthday presents. They might even have a long list of things that they would love to have. Surprisingly, it is not always the case...

The children's application forms and an encounter with an 8-years-old boy have completely changed that 'normal' reality.

On the first day of our new semester at Pondok Sukacita-Joyoboyo, we asked the children to fill in a form with their data. Furthermore, we asked them to mention what birthday present they would love to get on their birthday. Sadly though, many of them don't even know their special day, their birthday. Also, not a few children wrote 'up to you' as their birthday present wish.

One day in our conversation, a boy named Arya mentioned that it would soon be his birthday. However, his family wouldn't be able to celebrate it due to having no money. Then, I asked what birthday present he wanted for his birthday, if we could make it come true. Shyly, he said 'up to you.' After I urged him, he reluctantly said that he wanted clothes as his birthday present. What a simple wish, for most of us...

What makes most of these street children stop wishing or even dreaming?
Most of these children come from a single-parent family, former-drug-addicted parents, stern and harsh family. They must have been let down for too many times that they stop wanting or wishing anymore. Therefore, they hope for the least to prevent another disappointment in their lives.

By God's grace we are trying our best to make their dreams come true, even when it's just a modest present. We long to see the bright smile on their happy faces, giving them a little hope, and most of all, letting them know that they are loved by God through our little attention.
